From Kiruna to Trelleborg

FROM KIRUNA TO TRELLEBORG

On the first of June, 2012, I began cycling from Kiruna. My goal was Trelleborg – around 1900 kilometres south. I hadn’t planned an exact route. On the bike’s baggage carrier I had mounted a camera, programmed to take a photo every ten seconds while I cycled and during short breaks. The camera setting was automatic.

I didn’t take a single one of those photos. I wanted to leave the moment to chance and let the camera take care of technical matters. My role was to be a part of the moment, notice what was going on, let myself be led by people I happened upon. As a result, I was throughout my journey treated as a cyclist rather than as a photographer. This in turn influenced both my relationships with those I met and what ended up on the photos.

Along my way, on byways and highways, I asked people what they thought I should take a look at. Most of them pointed towards their home village, almost invariably ”The loveliest place in Sweden”, and I oftenmost wended my way there.

Throughout my journey the landscape constantly changes from a grey far North with heaps of snow in early June to a sunny, warm far South in late July. The rain was my constant companion! It took me 48 days to cycle around 2700 kilometres through Sweden. The camera took around 100,000 photos. Here is a selection!
